AI Overview Citation Study 2026
We analyzed 1,284 Google AI Overview results across commercial queries to find out exactly which pages get cited — and what those pages do differently. Twelve proprietary findings on format, schema, freshness, and authorship signals.

of AI Overview citations in our 1,284-query sample link to pages whose H1 directly answers the user query within the first 60 words of body copy.
median number of distinct domains cited per Google AI Overview block across commercial intent queries in the 2026 sample.
of cited pages use a definition-first paragraph structure (term → 1-sentence definition → expanded context), versus 12% of non-cited pages ranking in the top 10.
more likely a page is cited when it carries both Article and FAQPage schema on the same URL, compared to Article-only pages targeting the same query.
of AI Overview citations point to pages that are not in the top 3 traditional organic results for the same query — confirming AI re-ranks for answer fit, not just blue-link authority.
average Flesch-Kincaid grade level of cited paragraphs, versus 11.4 for non-cited top-10 organic results — readability strongly correlates with citation odds.
of cited pages include a visible last-updated date within 90 days of the citation capture, suggesting freshness is a soft prerequisite.
AI Overview blocks in our sample cited a page lacking a canonical tag — a basic technical hygiene signal that appears non-negotiable.
of cited paragraphs are lifted near-verbatim (>80% string overlap) into the AI Overview answer, with attribution — meaning your exact phrasing can become the answer.
citation rate uplift for pages whose author is represented by a Person schema with sameAs links to at least one third-party authority profile (LinkedIn, Wikidata, Crunchbase).
median time between a publisher's first indexed update and the AI Overview answer reflecting the new content, for queries already showing an AI Overview.
monitored AI Overview answers changed at least one cited source within a 14-day re-check window, indicating citation slots are contested and recoverable.
Methodology
We sampled 1,284 Google AI Overview results across 9 commercial verticals (insurance, home services, B2B SaaS, legal, finance, healthcare, e-commerce, education, local services) between February and May 2026. Each query was checked from a US desktop environment with personalization disabled.
For every cited URL we recorded: schema types present, H1 vs query match, paragraph structure of the answering passage, Flesch-Kincaid grade, presence of a visible updated date, canonical tag, author markup, and traditional organic rank for the same query.
A 14-day re-check window was run on 312 of the queries to measure citation volatility — how often AI Overviews swap one source for another without an underlying query change.
Findings are observational, not causal. They describe what cited pages share, not a guarantee that replicating those traits will earn a citation. Vertical mix may bias absolute percentages; relative differences between cited and non-cited pages are the more reliable signal.
